Sakura and Tsutsuji (spring cherry blossoms and azaleas) Nikko is unique in its location in terms of the tree blossom season. Because it is a mountainous region with mostly rural and wild landscapes, there are many varieties of cherry trees, azaleas and rhododendrons in bloom over several months. This is because the topography of the area allows for staggered blooming. For every 1 degree difference in temperature as elevation increases in the mountains, the flower blossom season is extended approximately one week.

Azaleas 2Nikko visitors can enjoy the myriad of colorful blossoms over an extended spring season as flowers bloom up the mountainsides at different times and rates. All in all, visitors can chase the spring colors up the mountains for over 6 weeks in spring from end the end of March until late May. Similarly, visitors can chase the famous fall colors down the mountains from the beginning of September through end of November.
