Temples & Shrines of Nikko
If you only have a short time to explore Nikko, it is our recommendation that you pay a visit to one or a few of our fabled temples. Nikko's temples are classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO (a United Nations organization). Our local Temples are some of the most decorative and ornate in all of Japan with a host of craftsmen maintaining them over the centuries. Even the trees in Nikko are protected under World Heritage status, lending itself well to housing some of the largest and oldest trees in Japan.
The temple area is about a 25 minute walk from Nikko Park Lodge (downhill). You can either stroll around the Temple area taking in the trees and sights of the temples or, you can purchase a two day pass for 1000¥ at the information centre near the entrance in order to enter the temple buildings. Inside the Temples you will find incredibly huge Buddha carvings and paintings. Be sure to take off your shoes!
This World Heritage site truly is an amazing thing to witness in person. You will quickly agree that it is unquestionably worthy of protection. We like to think that as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, all of Nikko technically belongs to the world. We are all owners and responsible for enjoying and maintaining this area’s beauty. Enjoy!
